Music Ministries
St. Cecilia is said to have heard heavenly
music inside her heart when she was forced to marry a pagan,
Valerian. A wealth of music, art and festivals in honor of St.
Cecilia has grown from this little bit of information from her
biography. She is the acclaimed Patron Saint of Music, especially
church music, as well as that of musicians, composers, instrument
makers and poets.
The name Cecilia means blind, and so, although we don't know if she
herself could not see, she is also the Patron Saint of the Blind. It
is believed that St. Cecilia was born in the 2nd or 3rd century A.D.
St. Cecilia's following flourished during the middle ages in Europe.
Songs were sung in her name, poetry was written, paintings with St.
Cecilia as the subject were created, and her feast day, on November
22, was happily celebrated.
She continued to be a popular topic for the arts well into the 18th
century. St. Cecilia became the patroness of all Western Music. Even
the Andrew Sisters, in 1941, recorded a song, "The Shrine of St.
Cecilia." |

There is an old Jewish legend about the origin
of praise. After God created mankind, says the legend, He asked the angels what
they thought of the world He had made. "Only one thing is lacking," they said.
"It is the sound of praise to the Creator." So, the story continues, "God
created music, the voice of birds, the whispering wind, the murmuring ocean, and
planted melody in people's hearts."
The purpose of St. Peter's music programs
is to enhance the liturgy, and invite people to worship together in song.
Each of the choirs has a different style; yet the music reflects on some
aspects of the gospel each week, as well as enhancing the celebration of the
Eucharist.
We encourage all of you with musical talent to come and sing/play with
us. There is no need to be able to read music - a good singing voice and/or
reasonable instrumentation skills are all that's needed!

St. Peter's Choir
We encourage our congregation to praise God in song, whether it is
congregational singing or being part of the cantor program. God has given
each of us a voice. Let us use it to praise Him in song!
